You may question my motivation to enter a beauty pageant. Even though I have many opinions about pageants, and beauty, I always wanted to represent my country at Miss Universe. Yes you heard me correctly. Mommy and I watched the international competition every year on television. It was inspiring. I enjoyed looking at the queens. I even thought of it as a prestigious title to hold. Miss Universe is a brand name that has lost it highest esteem or exclusivity over the years.
It would have been an excellent addition to my resume. I am not sadden by not being given a fair chance of competing for the title of Miss island Universe, but I am disappointed. When would this island graduate from having favorites, influencing the masses through propaganda and politics? I guess never.
I flew in with my enlightened perspective of life and its many experiences, but it wasn’t good enough. I have been told by many that I am beautiful, but I have said time and time again that beauty is subjective.
So I walked away from that experience with clarity. I love my country, but I despise the limitations of the island’s people to go against traditions. Forget pushing favorites. Select the most appropriate candidate. Someone who not only has exceptional beauty, but is also witty, charming and intelligent. Fundamentally remember pageants are about beauty which is a reflection from within.
